چکیده

It is pure fascination to watch the field of steaming Thoroughbreds thundering in full racing speed past the tightly packed stands of spectators in the marvelous mountain arena on the snow-covered lake of St. Moritz! A horse is able to accelerate from 0 to 60 km/h in only a few seconds, the heart rate speeding up to 200 bpm. Per minute, over 300 liters of blood are pumped through the body and about 2000 liters of air are pulled into the lungs. The horse does not need any EPOdoping or high-altitude training to increase its haematocrit (Hct, or the packed cell volume (PCV)), which is the decisive factor defining oxygen transport capacity: The PCV may easily be double depending upon the intensity of work. Everything in a horse is geared towards speed and endurance—starting shortly after its birth.

14-3-3  Protein is Detectable in Blood Serum and Fetlock Joint Synovial Fluid of High Performance Horses

Objective: To investigate whether 14-3-3 eta protein is detectable in synovial fluid and blood serum of high performance horses and to study whether any significant correlation between this and matrix metalloproteinase 1 and 3 in horse synovial fluid. Design: Clinical study. Animals: Eleven standard breed horses (seven high performances and four controls). Procedures: Blood serum and fetlock...

Left ventricular size and systolic function in Thoroughbred racehorses and their relationships to race performance.

Cardiac morphology in human athletes is known to differ, depending on the sports-specific endurance component of their events, whereas anecdotes abound about superlative athletes with large hearts. As the heart determines stroke volume and maximum O(2) uptake in mammals, we undertook a study to test the hypothesis that the morphology of the equine heart would differ between trained horses, depe...

Sport Horse Nutrition—an Australian Perspective

To perform at Olympic-caliber competitions, horses must consistently maintain a level of athletic performance that strains their muscular, skeletal, and digestive systems. As the consulting nutritionist to the Australian Equestrian Team, I am primarily concerned with the nutritional challenges of our equine athletes. Much of the equine nutritional research and product development effort is dire...

Recommendations for Management of Equine Athletes with Cardiovascular Abnormalities

Murmurs and arrhythmias are commonly detected in equine athletes. Assessing the relevance of these cardiovascular abnormalities in the performance horse can be challenging. Determining the impact of a cardiovascular disorder on performance, life expectancy, horse and rider or driver safety relative to the owner's future expectations is paramount. A comprehensive assessment of the cardiovascular...

Facial hair whorls (trichoglyphs) and the incidence of motor laterality in the horse.

Several species demonstrate obvious motor laterality (sidedness, handedness) in their motor function. Motor laterality in the horse affects locomotion and subsequently equine performance during training and may have inherent safety implications for equitation. Some of the most commonly used identification features in the horse are hair whorls (trichoglyphs), since their specific location and ch...
